Identifying Spatial Competence Outcomes for South African Secondary Schools

چکیده

The history of teaching geography and map use in South Africa is traced. Recent educational reform initiatives provide an opportunity to define specific learning outcomes for using local spatial information to address environmental issues relevant to the learner’s life experience. Learning material for improving spatial competence is being developed requiring the identification of specific learning outcomes for the preparation of individual instructional units. The search for a hierarchical framework of spatial techniques and skills, differentiated into levels of competence per grade in secondary school, is traced.
